PCM unveils EcoMoineau: the first eco-designed Progressing Cavity Pump on the market today
01/09/2008

Reduced clearance requirement simplifies servicing and makes pump perfect for limited-space industrial applications.

PCM, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of positive displacement pumps for the oil and gas, industry and food sectors, today introduced PCM EcoMoineau, a new Progressing Cavity Pump developed using EcoDesign to provide simplified servicing and reduced space requirements. PCM EcoMoineau brings the advantages of an eco-designed Progressing Cavity Pump to limited-space industrial applications. Ever since it was invented by René Moineau, the founder of PCM, the Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP) has been the preferred pump for a wide range of industrial applications and especially ideal for highly viscous and shear-sensitive fluids. The pulsation-free pumping action facilitates installation and use as well as providing constant flow rates. However conventional Progressing Cavity Pumps have a long shaft line, which limits their use in environments where space is restricted as well as, increasing their weight and transportation cost. Faced with this challenge, PCM engineers decided to rethink the PCP using EcoDesign principles. This unique approach to product design aims to minimize the environmental impact of a product during its entire lifecycle. PCM embraced eco-design in the late 1990s as a way of reducing the total cost of pump ownership and preparing for increasingly strict environmental regulations. The result of their work is the EcoMoineau: a PCP that takes up less space uses fewer raw materials to manufacture and less energy to operate. SIMPLIFIED SERVICE AND INSTALLATION The EcoMoineau pump is designed for easy installation, operation and servicing. Some of the new features are a direct result of PCM’s renowned experience in pump design. For example, the seals can be changed by simply disconnecting the drive, and the shaft line can be removed without disconnecting pipes. Other features are incredibly simple, such as integrated feet that remove the need for a separate baseframe. COMPACT BODY Conventional PCPs usually require a space with clearance of nearly a stator length for maintenance operations. The PCM EcoMoineau only requires 70mm (2.75in) of clearance, thanks to the shorter connecting rod. The EcoMoineau, therefore, requires less space for installation and servicing, which simplifies maintenance and reduces civil engineering and system integration costs. Logistics’ costs, including transportation and storage are reduced. REDUCED LIFECYCLE COSTS Thanks to EcoDesign, the EcoMoineau pump is more energy efficient to manufacture, transport and operate than a conventional PCP. The pump is 40% lighter and uses less power than the previous generation of PCM Moineau pumps. It is also ready for compliance with the European Energy-using Products (EuP) Directive. About PCM Based in Paris, France, with offices around the world, PCM is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of positive displacement pumps and fluid-handling equipment. It specializes in the development of pumping solutions for the lifting, transferring and dosing of abrasive, fragile, viscous, corrosive, hot and heavy products in challenging environments in the oil & gas, food and industrial sectors. PCM was co-founded in 1932 by the inventor of the Progressing Cavity Pump (PCP), René Moineau. For more information: www.pcm.eu
